Free Website Audits in Gilbert and Mesa: What to Demand in One
September 8, 2026 · The Valley Marketing Group
Every agency in the Valley offers a free website audit. Most of them are sales props — a PDF full of red X's designed to scare you into a retainer. Here is what a real one contains, and how to tell the difference before you waste an hour.
I am going to argue against my own offer for a minute, because the fastest way to explain what a good audit looks like is to show you what most of them get wrong.
The three fake audits you will be offered
- The automated scan. Somebody runs your URL through a tool, exports the PDF, and emails it with their logo on the cover. You can run the same scan yourself in ninety seconds. If the report has 47 issues and no ranking of which two matter, it is this.
- The keyword fear pitch. "You're not ranking for 340 keywords!" Most of those keywords are irrelevant, uncommercial, or ones you would never win. Volume of problems is not the same as value of fixing them.
- The redesign trap. Every finding, no matter what it is, concludes that you need a new website. Sometimes that is true. When it is the answer to every question, it is a product pitch wearing an audit costume.
What a real audit actually measures
Four things, in this order, because that is the order money leaks out.
1. Can people find you. Not "what's your domain authority." Do you show up in the map pack for the searches your customers actually type, from the neighborhoods you actually serve? A Gilbert dentist ranking beautifully in Phoenix is not winning.
2. Does the page load before they leave. Google publishes hard numbers here, so there is nothing to argue about. Core Web Vitals set the thresholds at 2.5 seconds or less for Largest Contentful Paint, 200 milliseconds or less for Interaction to Next Paint, and 0.1 or less for Cumulative Layout Shift — measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, split between mobile and desktop. INP became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024, replacing First Input Delay. If your auditor is still reporting FID, their tooling is two years stale.
3. Can a visitor become a lead in one step. This is the one almost nobody checks, and it is where most local sites are broken. Is the phone number clickable on a phone? Is there a form above the fold? Does the form actually send? Does anyone get notified when it does?
4. Do the pages that get traffic connect to the pages that make money. Traffic to a page with no next step is not an asset. It is a bounce with extra steps.
We ran this audit on ourselves and failed number four
Some honesty, since I am asking you to trust an audit.
We publish a lot. Over 300 articles, all sourced, ranking fine, traffic climbing month over month. Then we actually looked at what visitors did after they landed on one.
Sessions that touched a blog post averaged 1.02 pages. Essentially every reader landed, read, and left without ever visiting a page where they could hire us. Meanwhile visitors who arrived anywhere else on the site reached a pricing or contact page roughly half the time. Every single lead we had generated came from an ad landing page, a pricing page, or the phone. Not one came from an article.
The articles were good. The plumbing between the articles and the business did not exist. That is a conversion-path failure, and no keyword report would ever have shown it to us. We found it by looking at session behavior, and then we spent a day fixing all 300 posts.
If your site has a blog, that is the first thing I would check on yours.
What it should cost, and when to pay
A free audit is worth exactly what it costs if it is automated. It is worth a great deal if a person spent an hour in your analytics.
Reasonable expectations:
- Free: a genuine review of your site, your Google Business Profile and your ad account, delivered as a written document with a ranked list of what to fix. You should be able to hand it to any competent developer and have them execute it without us. That is what we do — see our pricing for what happens after, if you want it.
- Paid: deep technical work — log file analysis, full crawl of a large site, competitor gap research, conversion rate testing. If you have thousands of pages, pay someone. It is real work.
- Never pay for: a scan you can run yourself, a keyword list, or a report that arrives in under an hour.

Red flags in the first five minutes
- They ask for your Google Ads or Analytics access before showing you anything. A first-pass audit does not require account access.
- The report arrives instantly. Nobody looked at it.
- Every recommendation happens to be a service they sell.
- There is a countdown timer or a "this month only" discount on the audit itself.
- They cannot tell you which two fixes to do first. A ranked list is the entire product.
What to do with a good one
Fix the conversion path before the traffic. Always. A site getting 400 visitors a month with a working phone link and a form that notifies you beats a site getting 4,000 with neither.
Then fix speed, then fix the local listing, then — last — go chase rankings. Most owners in Gilbert and Mesa do this exactly backwards, spend a year building traffic to a broken funnel, and conclude that marketing does not work.
If you want a hand with the follow-up side specifically, our follow-up sequence agent and voice receptionist exist because "the form works" and "somebody responds within five minutes" are two different problems. We wrote about the second one in the five-minute lead response rule.
